Locally Owned Since 2017
About Rocky Mountain Academy of Music
We’re a neighborhood music school on North Academy Blvd in Colorado Springs, owned and run by a working musician. Our teachers perform with orchestras, symphonies, Army bands, and touring artists, and they teach kids, teens, and adults on 18 instruments. Your first lesson is free, so you can meet your teacher before you commit.
Our Story
Rocky Mountain Academy of Music is owned by Benito Vena, a classical and jazz saxophonist, pianist, producer, and film and television composer who has taught music in Colorado Springs for over a decade. Benito opened the studio in 2017 to give students something most studios don’t: teachers who perform professionally, and real chances to play music with other people.
Rocky Mountain Academy of Music was created to share the joy of music in a safe, friendly environment. We seek to build an enduring music community and foster a vibrant creative class.
“Benito and his staff of instructors are wonderful to work with. Very professional, talented, and supportive of not only their students but of the music community in Colorado Springs. My teenager looks forward to his lesson every week!”
Teachers Who Perform Professionally
You learn from working musicians. Our teachers have played with the Colorado Symphony, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs. Our trumpet teacher has served as principal trumpet in U.S. Army bands, our drum teacher has backed touring artists including War and Chicago as a session drummer, and our cello teacher holds a master’s degree in cello performance. Others are composers, producers, and music educators with years of classroom experience.
More Than Private Lessons
- Jazz ensemble and rock band. Students learn to play with others, which most studios don’t offer.
- Student recitals to build confidence on stage in a friendly setting.
- Recording and music production, plus composition, film scoring, and music theory courses.
- The Colorado Springs Free Improvisation Collective, a weekly session that calls our studio home.
Lessons Built Around You
We teach kids, teens, and adults, from first-time beginners to students preparing for honor band, all-state, and college auditions. Lessons focus on having fun, learning solid fundamentals, and playing the music you actually want to play.
