Cello Lessons in Colorado Springs
Few instruments sound as rich and expressive as the cello. It can carry a soaring melody, anchor an orchestra, or add warmth to a rock song, and it’s one of the most rewarding instruments to learn. At Rocky Mountain Academy of Music, we offer private cello lessons for students of all ages and skill levels at our studio on North Academy Blvd. Your first lesson is free, so you can meet your teacher and see how lessons work before you commit.

Who Cello Lessons Are For
- Young beginners. Cellos come in smaller fractional sizes, so kids can start early on an instrument that fits them.
- School orchestra students who want to keep up, move up a chair, or prepare for auditions and honor orchestra
- Adults starting the cello for the first time or coming back to it after years away
- Players exploring other styles like fiddle tunes, pop, rock, or film music
What You’ll Learn
Lessons are built around your goals and the music you want to play. Most students work on:
- Posture and setup. Sitting and holding the cello correctly prevents tension and makes everything else easier.
- Bowing. A relaxed, controlled bow arm is the key to a beautiful tone.
- Left-hand technique and intonation. Playing in tune is the biggest hurdle for new string players, and steady guidance from a teacher makes all the difference.
- Reading music in bass clef, plus tenor and treble clef as you advance
- Scales, shifting, and vibrato as your skills grow
- Music theory, so you understand how scales, chords, and keys fit together
Weekly lessons keep you progressing steadily, and a teacher can catch small habits before they become hard to unlearn.
“All three of my boys have been enrolled for over a year … they have also gained a new sense of confidence in their daily lives. … Hands down, the best music school for adults and children in Colorado.”
About the Cello
The cello is the lowest voice in the violin family, which also includes the violin and viola. Its four strings are tuned C, G, D, and A, an octave below the viola, giving it a range close to the human voice. That’s a big part of why it sounds so expressive. In the orchestra, the cello is the second-largest and second-lowest bowed string instrument, just above the double bass.
For centuries the cello mostly played bass lines, but composers like Bach, Haydn, Dvořák, and Elgar gave it some of the most beloved solo music ever written. Today you’ll hear it far beyond the concert hall. Jazz bassists like Oscar Pettiford played cello, the Beatles used it on “Eleanor Rigby,” and groups like Apocalyptica and the Avett Brothers have made it a central part of their sound.
More Ways to Grow
Our students can perform in student recitals to build confidence in a friendly setting. Many string students also take piano lessons to strengthen their music theory and ear training. We teach violin and viola too, so the whole family can learn under one roof.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age can my child start cello lessons?
Many children start between ages 6 and 9 on a smaller cello sized for them. Others begin around fourth or fifth grade when they join school orchestra. Adults are welcome at any age.
Do I need my own cello?
Yes, you’ll need an instrument to practice at home. Most families rent a cello at first, especially since kids move up in size as they grow. Ask us at your free lesson if you’d like help with sizing or rental options.
Is the cello hard to learn?
Like any string instrument, it takes patience, especially playing in tune. Most students find the cello comfortable to hold and are playing simple songs within a few weeks. Having a teacher from the start makes the early stages much smoother.
What’s the difference between a cello and a double bass?
The cello is smaller, sits between the knees while you play seated, and is tuned in fifths. The double bass is larger, is usually played standing, and is tuned in fourths an octave lower.
