Flute Lessons in Colorado Springs

The flute is one of the most beautiful and expressive instruments you can learn. It soars over an orchestra, sings melodies in concert band, and shows up in jazz, pop, and film music. At Rocky Mountain Academy of Music, we offer private flute lessons for students of all ages and skill levels at our studio on North Academy Blvd. Your first lesson is free, so you can meet your teacher and see how lessons work before you commit.

Who Flute Lessons Are For

  • Kids and teens in school band who want to keep up, move up a chair, or prepare for auditions and honor band
  • Beginners picking up their first wind instrument
  • Marching band students learning piccolo
  • Adults starting fresh, or coming back to a flute that’s been sitting in the closet since high school

What You’ll Learn

Lessons are built around your goals and the music you want to play. Most students work on:

  • Embouchure and tone. Getting a clear sound is the first big hurdle on the flute. It depends on small adjustments to your lips and air, and a teacher can help you find them much faster than trial and error.
  • Breath control and phrasing, so you can play longer lines with a steady, supported sound
  • Finger technique. You’ll build smooth, efficient fingerings, including alternate fingerings as you advance.
  • Reading music, rhythm, scales, and articulation, including double and triple tonguing
  • Expanding your range into the upper register while keeping it in tune and controlled
  • Music theory and musicality, so you understand the music you’re playing and can make it your own

Weekly lessons keep you progressing steadily, and a teacher can catch posture, embouchure, and breathing habits early, before they become hard to unlearn.

    About the Flute

The flute is one of the oldest instruments in the world. Archaeologists have found bone flutes more than 40,000 years old, and nearly every culture has its own version, from bamboo flutes to wooden folk flutes. The modern metal flute was developed by Theobald Boehm in the 1840s, and his key system is still used today.

Composers have loved the flute for centuries. Bach and Mozart wrote concertos and sonatas for it, and Debussy’s Syrinx and Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun made it one of the signature sounds of French music. Outside the concert hall, players like Herbie Mann brought the flute into jazz, and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull made it a rock instrument. More recently, Lizzo has shown a whole new generation how fun the flute can be.

    More Ways to Grow

Our students can perform in student recitals to build confidence in a friendly setting, and flutists interested in jazz can join one of our jazz ensembles. We also teach clarinet and saxophone, so it’s easy to add a second woodwind, and many students take piano lessons to strengthen their music theory.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    How long are lessons?

Choose 30, 45, or 60-minute private lessons. There’s no long-term contract, and your first lesson is free.

What age can my child start flute lessons?

Most students start around age 9 to 11, often when they join school band and their arms can comfortably reach the keys. Younger beginners can start on a flute with a curved headjoint. Adults are welcome at any age.

Do I need my own flute?

Yes, you’ll need an instrument to practice at home. Many families rent one through their school or a local music store. Ask us at your free lesson if you’d like recommendations.

Why can’t I get a sound out of my flute?

That’s normal at first. The flute has no reed or mouthpiece to buzz into, so the sound depends entirely on the angle and shape of your air. Most beginners get a clear sound within the first lesson or two with a teacher’s help.

    Do you teach piccolo?

Yes. Piccolo uses the same fingerings as flute but needs a more focused air stream, and it’s often required for marching band and some concert band parts.
